Network
technology has come a long way over the years and there are many different
approaches one can take when considering things like security, speed, and

A business network may consist of 2 to 200 or more computers. Depending on your
business, and your potential for growth, we will recommend and implement a
network system that will work for you. There are two major types of networks,
they are Peer to Peer and Client/Server networks.
In a peer-to-peer network there are no dedicated servers or hierarchy among the
computers. All of the computers on the network handle security and
administration for themselves.
Things to consider before installing a Peer to Peer network:
Peer-to-peer networks are designed for connecting a small number of computers.
They tend to run into problems at around 10-15 computers.
Security on a peer-to-peer network is not very powerful. So if you have
security concerns go for something you can control (like a server). Because the
users will be required to give access to folders, they can choose to not
require passwords. This lack of hierarchy has a tremendous impact on the
security of your network and you will need adequate training for your users to
prevent problems.
If your organization is growing rapidly, it will usually outgrow a peer-to-peer
network very quickly. While a peer-to-peer network may work fine for ten
computers, it probably won't for twenty.
In an environment with more than 10-15 computers, a peer-to-peer network begins
to become more trouble than it is worth: your computers start to slow down, you
can never find the file you are looking for, and security is non-existent. The
client-server model of networking is the way to go for larger organizations.
For example, as network traffic increases, you can add another server to handle
the additional load. You can also centralize your security to the Server,
setting permissions for each user and computer in one location. Also, a
Client/Server network is much easier to back up, greatly improving the
reliability and confidentiality of your data.
A multi-computer environment is not only practical in a business environment,
but is now common place in the household. Children use computers for homework
research, and many times share the same computer with an adult who has
sensitive files that must be protected. Many have made the choice to get
multiple computers and share an internet connection as well as a printer. There
are many solutions available to help you monitor all the household computers
from one, so you may monitor your child's activities.
